Age-Appropriate Style - Hem Lines

Every woman wants to look their youngest and best. The key to looking great is choosing age-appropriate styles. Unfortunately, many women aren’t sure what the rules are. So as your resident stylist, I am here to help you decipher what is and is not age-appropriate. This will be part one of our series on age-appropriate style.

First and foremost, dressing in clothing meant for girls half your age does NOT make you look younger. In fact, it does the opposite. It ages you!

Let’s start with hem lines. Generally speaking, mini-skirts should be reserved for women under 35, with discretion still being advised. If you are over 35, it is still appropriate to choose a skirt that hits right at your knee but not much shorter. Caution: stay away from the Junior Department. The rises and hem-lines are all inappropriate for women over the age of 22.

A great knee length pencil skirt looks great on women of all ages. You will look chic and young. Obviously a longer skirt is appropriate as any age as well.

    Hi Amy-

I think your advice about wearing age-appropriate clothing was just right! Now that some 80’s fashions are back in style, it’s very tempting to want to dress like we did in high school, but nothing looks more tragic than a woman in her 40’s or 50’s wearing these fashions. You are exactly right, it does the opposite - makes you look older!

I think the advice you gave me about selecting one trendy peice, while keeping the rest real classic and “clean” are rules to live by! In so doing, we can still look very stylish and embrace the new fall styles without appearing to be in our own little time warp.

    Thanks for your honesty Amy!
